Florida Medical Center has been named an American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) Center of Excellence.
This designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
Faced with clinical evidence that the most experienced and best-run bariatric surgery programs have by far the lowest rates of complications, the ASBS Centers of Excellence program was created to recognize bariatric surgery centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals continue to improve the quality and safety of care.
To earn this designation, FMC underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected.
“This is a great honor for FMC, one of the pioneers of gastric bypass surgery in the State of Florida,” said Aurelio Fernandez, CEO. “To be awarded this Center of Excellence designation by the most respected bariatric organization in the U.S. is a tribute to our outstanding bariatric surgeons and staff, who have raised the bar nationally for the quality and improved outcomes of bariatric procedures.
"Due to the increasing prevalence of morbid obesity and its inherent health risks, we are pleased to have a high-quality surgical weight reduction program that offers this patient population hope and help in treating this life-threatening condition,” said Carlos Carrasquilla, MD.
