Obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure – are you at risk?

Did you know that an estimated 300,000 deaths each year may be attributed to obesity? In fact, the incidence of heart disease is increased in those who are overweight or obese (Body Mass Index greater than 25), and high blood pressure is twice as common in adults who are obese than those at a healthy weight.

If you are struggling with obesity, the Surgical Weight Loss Institute may be able to help. Here are just some of the benefits patients may receive after surgery:

  • The average patient’s weight loss has been 70% of excess weight within 12 months.
  • Most patients with type-II diabetes are able to discontinue medications and maintain normal blood sugar levels.
  • Most patients with hypertension are able to sustain normal blood pressure readings after discontinuing medications following surgery.
  • Most patients with sleep apnea may require no treatments following surgery.  Most patients may experience higher levels of self-esteem with their improved body image and enjoyed new-found energy.

 A Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Every patient undergoes a thorough psychological evaluation before and after surgery. Patients follow a personal fitness plan that includes nutritional counseling. In addition to expert surgeons, our team includes trained nurses and staff who guide patients through every step of the process. Plastic surgeons are also available for reconstructive surgery, if necessary

Surgical Weight Loss Options – Are You Eligible?

The Surgical Weight Loss Institute offers options for persons who are 100 or more pounds overweight or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more.

"Roux-En-Y" gastric bypass, commonly called bariatric surgery, reduces the size of the stomach to a small pouch that can hold minimal amounts of food. The pouch fills rapidly and empties slowly, which causes the brain to respond to the feeling of fullness. This helps reduce caloric intake, allowing the person to loss weight. The procedure is usually performed laparoscopically, unless it is medically necessarily to do otherwise.

An alternative to gastric bypass, lap-band (Laparoscopic Gastric Banding) is a minimally invasive procedure that involves placing an inflatable ring around a portion ofthe stomach. This creates a small pouch that helps limit the amount of food a person eats.
