Healing Wounds, Restoring Hope

A non-healing wound is considered a serious medical condition, possibly indicating other health problems or leading to greater complications. If you have a non-healing wound, don't wait to seek treatment - call the Wound Healing Institute at Florida Medical Center (954)735-6000, Ext. 2713.

Specializing in the care and treatment of chronic or non-healing wounds, the Wound Healing Institute is a hospital-based program staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals, including affiliated physicians and surgeons, dieticians, patient educators, nurses, and more. The program utilizes a wide variety of medical techniques to promote successful healing and improve quality of life.

How Are Chronic Wounds Caused?
While chronic wounds may have a variety of causes, some of the most common include:

 - Certain disease, including diabetes
 - Accident or trauma
 - Poor Circulation
 - Surgery

No matter what the cause of your wound, The Wound Healing Institute will carefully assess your medical condition and health history with a complete initial work-up before recommending treatment.

The Treatment Plan
At the Wound Healing Institute, your care will be tailored to your individual needs, and may include a variety of different treatment methods or components:

Medication - Many wounds can be treated successfully with topical medications.
Wound Cleansing - Most patients are taught how to cleanse their wounds properly, which helps promote healing.
Education - Treatment plans often include education of patients and their families or caregivers, to ensure proper wound care and help prevent reoccurrence.
Surgery - In certain cases, vascular surgery may be necessary to restore the free flow of blood. Other forms of surgery may include orthopedic, podiatric, plastic, and general. Surgery is performed by surgeons affiliated with Florida Medical Center.
Special Services - Ancillary services available to patients of the Wound Healing Institute include nutritional and diabetic counseling by a licensed dietician, diabetic educator, physical therapy, and fittings for orthotics and prostheses.

Advanced Wound Healing with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The Wound Healing Institute at Florida Medical Center is pleased to offer another healing technique made possible with an advanced piece of equipment, the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber. This special pressurized chamber contains 100 percent oxygen, which is breathed in through the lungs and significantly increases the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream, improving circulation and providing many benefits. Among other things, increased oxygen is delivered to the wound tissues, and infection control may be enhanced. This can help to advance the wound healing process.

Your Doctor: An Important Team Member
The Wound Healing Institute will work closely with your personal or primary care physician throughout your participation in the program. He or she may be contacted for health history information, and your progress will be reported regularly. When you have completed the program, you will be returned to your physician's care.
