Since performing the first open-heart surgery in Broward County in 1974, The Heart Institute of Florida has cared for thousands of patients with cardiovascular disease, the nation's number-one killer.   The Heart Institute of Florida brings together a multitude of resources in emergency care, diagnostics, minimally invasive interventions, heart surgery and follow-up care.

Each individual patient benefits from advanced technology, a skilled, experienced medical staff, specialized units and a dedicated support staff.  Board-certified cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, certified registered nurses, technologists and other support professionals provide compassionate, personalized care for patients every step of the way from diagnosis through recovery.

Features

The Heart Institute of Florida has one of only two 80-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) systems in the state.  When compared to traditional 12-lead ECG, this advanced technology scans the entire heart and offers a quicker, less invasive solution for difficult-to-diagnose heart attack patients.  Other important features include:

  • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)
  • Carotid artery, peripheral artery angioplasties, stenting
  • Therapeutic laser atherectomy (mechanical plaque removal) .  Advanced all-digital cardiovascular imaging system
  • Ventricular assist device, which supports diagnosis and treatment of seriously ill patients in the catheterization lab.

Emergency Care

Always open, Emergency Services has physician and surgical specialists available and is equipped with advanced technology to help patients in a heart crisis.  Protocols include thrombylic therapy (use of clot-dissolving medications).  Staff respond to heart emergencies in ways proven most effective in saving lives and restoring health.  Emergency patients can be assured that all capabilities of the Heart Institute are available if they need them.

Diagnostics

Excellence in diagnostic care results from uniting advanced technology and skilled physicians.  Our diagnostics features include:

  • Four cardiac catheterization suites
  • Advanced imaging, with the latest all-digital Xray cardiovascular imaging system.
  • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)
  • Intracoronary echo ultrasound (ICE)

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Since angioplasty revolutionized heart care several decades ago, physicians continue to develop more minimally invasive heart procedures, including traditional open surgery using less invasive approaches.  The Heart Institute performs peripheral angioplasties, carotid artery stenting and therapeutic laser atherectomy, which mechanically removes blockages in arteries.  We continue to expand our capabilities with new vascular procedures that use minimally invasive technologies.

Heart Surgery

If surgical invention is needed, the Heart Institute of Florida stands ready with a skilled, experienced staff and advanced surgical facilities for procedures such as coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve repair and replacement and more.

Dedicated Units

A dedicated Coronary Care Unit,  Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Medical Intensive Unit provide advanced care for heart patients.  An hemodynamic patient monitoring and patient data clinical information system supports patient recovery.
